Spotted: Maui’s favorite finned friends have made an early appearance to this year’s season.
Just North of Molokini heading towards South Maui’s Maalaea Harbor, the Pacific Whale Foundation sighted the first of the gentle giants on October 8th, 2018 and this has stirred up some excitement amongst residents and visitors alike.
Each winter season, humpback whales migrate to the warm Hawaiian waters to escape the chilly northern waters as well as breed their next generation. So the first whale sighting is always a good sign since it means that the last season proved successful for them! And between the warm, shallow waters and the protection from surrounding islands, just off the coast of Maui provide optimal conditions to raise a family.
